Waste management register – how to apply

If you transport waste or act as a waste broker, the activities must be approved in the waste management register. The waste holder must check the details of the waste carrier from the register.

How to submit an application to the waste management register

  1. Submit the application to the authority in whose jurisdiction you operate

The application is submitted to the centre for economic development, transport and the environment in whose operating area most of the activities are carried out.

If waste in the possession of a waste broker is transported by one or more waste transport companies, the activities of each company must be separately approved in the waste management register.

  2. Submit the application electronically

Submit the application in the regional administration’s e-service. Also read the instructions.

The application can be submitted by e-mail or in paper form if it is not possible to prepare the application in the e-service. The form can be found in the suomi.fi service:

  3. Decision and extract from the waste management register from the centre for economic development, transport and the environment

Once the register approval decision has been made, the centre for economic development, transport and the environment will provide the carrier/broker with the decision and an extract from the waste management register. The driver is obliged to keep an extract from the waste management register available during the transport of waste.

  4. Extract validity period

The extract from the register is reviewed every three years. If the operations change, the operator must notify the centre for economic development, transport and the environment of the changes, for example in the e-services of the regional administration.

The waste holder must check the details of the carrier.

Before ordering a waste transport or brokering service, the waste holder must check that the waste carrier or broker has been approved and entered in the waste management register. They must also check that the approval also covers the transport of the waste in question.

The waste holder may request the carrier or broker to present an extract from the waste management register.

Operators approved for the waste management register can be found on the waste management compass page jatehuoltokompassi.fi.
