Development of Finnish waste management and monitoring of National Waste Plan

Clear and simple indicators have been chosen to monitor the progress of the National Waste Plan. The indicators are based on data that is already collected and monitored based on existing regulations. This also secures tracking the data in the future.

The Waste Plan is monitored by some key figures describing the general development of waste management. In addition, four focus areas have been selected: municipal waste, biodegradable waste, electrical and electronic waste, and construction waste. The focus areas have been chosen because these waste streams present special challenges in reducing the amount and hazardousness of waste and promoting recycling in future years.

Most important sources of information include waste statistics produced by Statistics Finland as well as producer responsibility statistics.

Progress of the measures is being followed

The progress of the measures will be followed midway through the waste planning period and at the end of the planning period in 2027. The interim assessment summarizes the possible measures that have not yet been started.

The Finnish Environment Institute compiles quantitative indicators every year. The Ministry of the Environment is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the measures.
