organisations. The most important forums are European co-operation on spatial planning and the ESPON programme, the Visions and Strategies around the Baltic Sea programme (VASAB) and Nordic co-operation on spatial planning. The fundamental aim of the co-operation is to promote good planning practices in different countries, by sharing knowledge and experiences.

Land use planning is based on national legislations and the co-operation does not seek to harmonise the land use planning systems. However, some shared international principles of spatial planning have been approved at the political level, in several conclusions, declarations and documents.
