Oil Ice Separator -LOIS

To response oil pollution in ice conditions, Finnish Environment Institute has developed Oil Ice Separator -LOIS. The LOIS consists of removable oil ice separator units, that can be installed to an ordinary oil recovery vessel when oil response in ice conditions is needed.

Operating principle

Operating principle of LOIS is based on grates that are in reciprocating motion. The grates' movement separates the oil from ice. Oil rises through the grates to water surface, that is inside the body of the LOIS. From there the oil floats inside the oil recovery vessel's hull and to the oil recovery brushes.  The oil and water are separated using the vessels normal, inbuilt brush system. The small pieces of ice, that enter the brush system are transferred back to sea by conveyor.

The grate is 200 cm wide and the lantern fixing angle is 8 degrees.

The LOIS can be lifted above the ice field when the vessel is enroute.

SYKE owns the patent of the Oil Ice Separator. A Finnish company LAMOR Corporation has the manufacturing rights and is marketing the device world wide. The commercial name of the device is Oil Ice Separator LOIS
