International issues
Environmental issues are international by nature. This has also been shown in the work of the former Central Finland Regional Environment Centre, now Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for Central Finland (ELY centre).
Cooperation projects
The most significant international cooperation projects of the Central Finland office have been implemented in Estonia and South Africa. In Estonia the aim of the projects was supplementary training to implement the European Union Water Framework Directive.
In South Africa the local environmental administration was developed together with the local government. Cooperation included also improving land use planning and nature conservation.
Now, ELY centre is participating in a project "Support to Magaliesberg Biosphere Initiative, South Africa".
International projects
There have also been other more periodical international cooperation projects carried out at the Central Finland Regional Environment Centre which are EU supported. One of these projects, Wetland Life 2001-2006, was finished at the beginnig of 2006.
