Emission monitoring in real time
Instructions for navigation
Activate the map with a mouse click. Click on the province you are interested in, and details of its emissions and a graph will appear on the right. Click on the graph for a larger version with more details. Details for smaller regions within provinces can be found by clicking inside the province maps.
Details from the municipalities in the Carbon Neutral Municipalities scheme (CANEMU) can be found as follows:
Uusikaupunki and Mynämäki:
Select Western Finland Province > Select SW Finland region > Select the smaller areas Uusikaupunki (on the west coast) and Mynämäki (just inland from Uusikaupunki)
Kuhmoinen:
Select Western Finland Province > Select Central Finland > Select Kuhmoinen (in the south)
Padasjoki:
Select Southern Finland Province > Select Päijät-Häme > Select Padasjoki (in the NW)
Parikkala:
Select Southern Finland Province > Select South Karelia > Select Parikkala (in the east)

Weekly statistics compiling real time greenhouse gas emission monitoring data are available for three main sources:
- Consumers’ electricity use
- Heating
- Road traffic
Emissions from these sources make up the lion’s share of consumers’ direct environmental footprints.
All regions of mainland Finland are covered by real time emissions monitoring. Emissions are monitored in greater detail in the five municipalities involved in the CANEMU scheme: Mynämäki, Parikkala, Uusikaupunki, Kuhmoinen and Padasjoki.
The weekly compiled figures cover emissions of the three most important greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Emissions of methane and nitrous oxide can be converted to carbon dioxide equivalent using coefficients that compare their relative impacts on atmospheric warming. Accordingly 1 kg of methane corresponds to some 21 kg of carbon dioxide; and N2O is an even more potent greenhouse gas, with 1 kg N2O corresponding to 310 kg of CO2. The weekly figures express emissions in terms of CO2-equivalent, including the correctly weighted impacts of emissions of CH4 and N2O.
This CO2 emission reporting service is produced jointly by Benviroc Oy, GWP Oy, the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and the Finnish News Agency (STT).
