Map of the ecological state of Finland’s surface waters

First map of the ecological and chemical state of Finland’s surface waters was completed in 2008 and reported to EU in 2010. Water bodies are classified largely according to monitoring data compiled over the period 2000–2007. In some cases older data has also been used, since particularly for smaller lakes and rivers more recent information is insufficient or not available, especially on biological factors.

During the first planning period all river catchment areas over 200 km2 and all lakes of more than 5 km2 will be assessed individually, in addition to any smaller rivers and lakes with evident water protection problems. Coastal areas will be assessed on a regional basis.
