The research vessel Aranda will set off on a research expedition amid the peak of algal blooms, its first one in five years. The main purpose of the expedition, covering almost the entire main basin of the Baltic Sea, is to develop new methods for monitoring blue-green algae blooms. In total 22 researchers, from nine research institutes - in the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Russia, and the UK - will take part in this multidisciplinary expedition led by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). The nine-day SYNTAX 2010 cruise will begin in Helsinki today, Wednesday, 21 July 2010.
