Karelian Mires and Virgin Forests, Pearls in the Chain of Geohistory
LIFE Nature project 2002 - 2007 supported by the European Union
The LIFE Nature project "Karelian mires and Virgin Forest - Pearls in the Chain of Geohistory was carried out during 2002-2007 in cooperation between the North Karelia Regional Environment Centre and the Metsähallitus. The project encompassed nine Natura 2000 sites located in the North Karelia. The main objectives of the project were the protection of boreal ald-growth forests and their species, the planning of the management and utilisation of these sites as well as the restoration of the habitats to their natural state. The total budjet of the project was around 1.8 million euros, 40 % of which was financed by the European Union.
