The Nordic Countries are Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland as well as the 3 self-governing territories the Åland Islands, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Åland belongs to Finland, and Greenland and the Faroe Islands to Denmark. The total population in the Nordic countries is about 24.7 million.

After the Second World War the co-operation between the Nordic Countries has been tight. The co-operative bodies are the Nordic Council NC and the Nordic Council of Ministers NCM. The NC is the forum for Nordic parliamentary co-operation, and the NCM is the forum for Nordic governmental co-operation. Environmental co-operation is managed in the various working groups under the NCM.
