Convention on Biological Diversity
The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signing at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. The convention has 188 parties and 168 countries have signed it. 80 parties (41%) have a CHM web site.
There are 194 independent states on six continents. 192 countries are member states of the United Nations. (28 June 2006).
The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biodiversity (IBD) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
