The 12th international field excursion and congress organised by the International Mire Conservation Group IMCG was organised in Finland, the land of mires. Mire experts from over 20 countries travelled across Finland and explored the pearls of the Finnish mires 14-23 July 2006.

After the excursion the mire experts gathered at Eerikkilä sports institute. The factors threatening the diversity of mires all over the world were discussed at the congress 24-26 July 2006.
Two thirds of Finnish mires have been drained for forestry and agriculture. Peat extraction threatenes mires in many places all over the world.

The excursion and congress was organised by the Finnish Environment Institute, Regional environment centres, the Finnish Ministry of the Environment, Metsähallitus and the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation.

The Martimoaapa nature reserve is a vast aapamire massif, which is famous of its bird fauna. It is also one of the Finnish Ramsar sites. Access to the mire is easy by using the board walks.
Teuravuoma nature reserve is a vast aapamire massif in East Lapland. Due to its attractive landscapes and its rich fauna and flora it is an important nature tourism area.
In Salamajärvi national park in western Finland there are southern aapamires.
Heikinjärvenneva mire, a part of Salamajärvi national park, is famous for its rich bird fauna. It is one of the Finnish Ramsar sites.
Ryöskäri area represents the land uplift coast in the Bothnian Bay area. In this area mires start to initiate and develop directly from the sea. Ryöskäri area is so far not protected.
In 2005 the mire experts had their field symposium and congress in Tierra del Fuego, Angentina. A raised bog with Sphagnum magellanicum.
