Summary of the Evaluation of Threatened Species in Finland 2000

The Evaluation of Threatened Species in Finland 2000 assessed the status of about 19,000 species out of a total of 43,000 known species in Finland. More than half of all of Finland's species are so poorly known that no attempt was made to evaluate their status, especially including many insects, microalgae and Ascomycetes fungi. Some species in other groups were not evaluated because they only occur in Finland occasionally, or because Finland is outside their natural range.

Sufficient data was available for 15,000 species to be classified. About one in ten species have been classified as threatened according to the categories used by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) which divides threatened species into three sub-categories: Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), and Vulnerable (VU). The threatened species category does not include species that are extinct in the wild in Finland (EX, RE, EW), or species categorised as Near Threatened (NT), or Data Deficient (DD).

The evaluation of threatened species also compiled information on species' primary habitats and specific threats.

The Results of the Evaluation of Threatened Species in Finland 2000

Of the 19,000 species whose status was assessed, there was not enough information to accurately define the status of about 3,600 species (19%), which were therefore classified under the IUCN category Data Deficient (DD). Some 12,330 species (65%) were classified as being of Least Concern (LC), while 186 species (1.2%) were found to have become extinct in the wild in Finland. Altogether 1,505 species (10%) were classified as Threatened, and 1,060 species (7%) as Near Threatened.

Extinction rates were highest for the species groups of cryptogams (2.8%) and vertebrates (2.3%).

More than half (53%) of Finland's threatened species are classified as Vulnerable (VU), while 30% (452 species) are classified as Endangered (EN), and 16% (249 species) as Critically Endangered (CR). Most of the threatened species are within the species groups cryptogams, vascular plants and vertebrates.

The largest proportions of species classified as Near Threatened (NT) are for the groups vertebrates (15%) and cryptogams (12%). The proportions of species classified as being of least concern vary between 40% and 99%. Out of the five reptile species found in Finland, two are threatened and one is near threatened. Of groups with larger numbers of species, liverworts seem to be faring worst, with only 61% of all species having a favourable status.
