Lake register
Finland's lake register contains basic information on all surface water bodies in Finland over 1 ha in extent. The register includes the names of the lakes, their river basin codes, their precise geographical locations, their total surface areas, and the total lengths of their shorelines. The register also includes information about depth surveys and the physiographical codes defined as depth surveys are carried out. This physiographic data is largely based on surveys conducted using GIS data and equipment.
The information in the national lake register is used in river basin monitoring, hydrological research, and the planning of restoration measures. The lake register also provides useful basic data to facilitate the planning of water protection measures and the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive.
