Uusimaa Regional Environment Centre is a part of the Finnish environment administration; it is a regional state administration body in the capital metropolitan area, acting as an active agent in developing the environment and in environmental issues.
Uusimaa is the most densely populated area in Finland with about 1,5 million inhabitants. Uusimaa is on the southern coast at the Gulf of Finland, which is the easternmost part of the Baltic Sea. The Helsinki metropolitan area is growing rapidly and the growth requires strong integration of environmental matters with other issues.

Uusimaa has a great biodiversity with a large number of species and a great variety of habitats. The coastal zone has been inhabited for a long time and built environment and the landscape reminds of human activities during centuries.
Uusimaa Regional Environment Centre promotes sustainable development and is responsible for environmental protection, nature conservation, protection of the cultural environment and exploitation and management of water resources.
|
The Centre also supervises land use and building administration of the municipalities. The centre compiles information on the state and use of the environment at a regional level and promotes environmental awareness.
CURRENT
Uusimaa Regional Environment Centre has completed its statement on the domestic environmental impact assessment report regarding the planned underwater natural gas pipeline running between Russia and Germany. This concludes the domestic environmental impact assessment procedure.
Environment Centre considers the performed environmental impact assessment to be sufficient in its fundamental aspects, but requires that Nord Steam AG conducts further investigations for the purpose of the authorisation procedure. In the assessment, the project’s impacts within the Finnish economic zone have, in the main, been recognised, and extensive analysis and a correctly sized assessment of these effects have been performed.
